Narnia Kennels is a working German Shepherd Dog kennel located 15 minutes south of Highway 401, in South-Western Ontario. Narnia Kennels is a Canadian kennel specializing in working German Shepherds, with sound bodies and stable temperaments. We produce CKC registered German Shepherd puppies from imported European bloodlines. We offer guarantees on all puppies and adults.

In June, 2021, we added our first Chodsky pes, a one year old male, who we named Orry.  He was followed by a super sweet female named Fortuna (Toonie) in September, 2021.  Follow the link for Bohemian Shepherds in the menu for further information on this breed and our next expected litter of puppies!

My name is Robin Winter and I have been breeding German Shepherds for the past 39 years, working to build our lines up to what they are now. My parents and grandparents also bred German Shepherds, so it is a family tradition and love. My husband Harold helps with the whelping of puppies and the raising and training of breeding potential puppies. My five children enjoy helping to feed the dogs, socialize puppies, and train some of our up-and-comers.

I am a Veterinary Technician and have studies dog genetics and behaviour for 40 years. My training as a technician has helped to make our kennel a healthy, clean place for our puppies, and for us to be very knowledgeable about the genetics behind breeding.

Breeding is an art and our lines are changing and developing as we try to produce the ultimate dog. The dogs we strive to produce here at Narnia are working dogs, that is, they are bred to be able, both mentally and physically, to endure long hours of training. Though they have the endurance and workability, our dogs love to be part of a family, and make excellent family companions and friends.

We have combined Czech, Slovak, DDR, and German bloodlines. We occasionally use dogs from other European working bloodlines. All of our puppies are sold as Canadian Kennel Club registered German Shepherds.
We enjoy dogs that are powerful, with nice deep colours, and are a substantial size. The temperament of the dogs is most important, as many go for pets, and many also go to working homes and need to be stable enough to handle the challenge and stress of being worked.
We have red/black sables, blacks, black & reds, and black & tans in our kennel. Puppies are usually available in these colours, or there is an upcoming litter with that colouring. The sables can have a fairly wide range of colour, but we try to have darker, richer pigmented sables in our kennel.

We have normal coats, plush coats, and long coats in our kennel, but do not always have long coats available. Usually one litter a year does have some long coated puppies. A sound dog, in both body and temperament should be more important than simply the colour or coat of the dog.

Our dogs come in the house and are housebroken and obedience trained. None of them are strictly kennel dogs, as they are our friends and companions first, and breeding dogs second. We try to get our dogs involved with different areas of work such as obedience, Schutzhund, tracking, agility and obstacle training, and protection work.
Our dogs all have their hips x-rayed and elbows checked before they are bred. We screen our primary breeding dogs and randomly screen a few puppies from each litter for eye disorders. We also test breeding stock for various different genetically inherited diseases, including von Willebrand's disease and Degenerative Myelopathy (DM).  This allows us to be able to breed knowledgeably and produce healthy dogs.  Dogs are carefully screened to have sound body structure, and a good, solid working temperament. We are on our fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth generations of some of our bloodlines, and have seen a very consistent type of German Shepherd emerge from our kennel.

Our foundation female was Akela - Bara Z Konce Ase CD - a dark red sable Czechoslovakian import. She was a big boned, solid dog, and had high retrieve drive. She was trained in tracking, obedience, and protection work. She had her first title in obedience and was a personal protection dog.  Akela was imported as a puppy, so I raised and trained her myself. She was gentle with all people, especially children. She produced excellent ratios for clear hips. Her puppies are noted for their sound bodies, even temperaments, and their high will to please. She has offspring on police forces across Canada and the United States, there are more than 30 Police Service dogs that are directly related to her. Akela sadly died just shy of her thirteenth birthday in April, 2004.

Whether you are a pet owner, a top competitor, a breeder, or a police force, these great dogs will enrich your life and make you enjoy training a magnificent animal!  Enjoy our webpage!
