Introduction to
Narnia Reg'd Kennels

Please Scroll Down

Thank-you for reading our webpage about our German Shepherd Dogs. Narnia Kennels is a Canadian kennel specializing in working German Shepherds, with sound bodies and stable temperaments. We produce CKC registered German Shepherd puppies from imported European bloodlines. We offer guarantees on all puppies and adults.

My name is Robin Winter and I have been breeding German Shepherds for the past 20 years, working to build our lines up to what they are now. My parents and grandparents also bred German Shepherds, so it is a family tradition and love. My husband Harold helps with the whelping of puppies and the raising and training of breeding potential puppies. My children Christopher (11 years old),  Rebekah (9 years old), Suzanna (5 years old), Isaiah (3 years old), and Abigail (9 months old) enjoy helping feed dogs and socialize puppies.

I am a Registered Veterinary Technician and also do occasional obedience classes and behaviour consultations. My training as a technician has helped to make our kennel a healthy clean place for our puppies, and for us to be very knowledgeable about the genetics behind breeding.

Whether you are a pet owner, a top competitor, a breeder, or a police force, these great dogs will enrich your life and make you enjoy training a magnificent animal!

Our Kennel Back

Breeding is an art and our lines are changing and developing as we try to produce the ultimate dog. The dogs we strive to produce here at Narnia are working dogs, that is, they are bred to be able, both mentally and physically, to endure long hours of training. Though they have the endurance and workability, our dogs love to be part of a family, and make excellent family companions and friends.

We have combined Czech, Slovak, DDR, and German bloodlines. We occasionally use dogs from other European working bloodlines. All of our puppies are sold as Canadian Kennel Club registered German Shepherds.

We enjoy dogs that are powerful, with nice deep colours, and are a substantial size. The temperament of the dogs is most important, as many go for pets, and many also go to working homes and need to be stable enough to handle the challenge and stress of being worked.

Colours and Coat Types Available Back
to
INDEX

We have red sables, blacks, black and reds, and black and tans in our kennel. Puppies are usually available in these colours, or there is an upcoming litter with that colouring. The sables can have a fairly wide range of colour, but we try to have darker, richer pigmented sables in our kennel.

We have normal coats, plush coats, and long coats in our kennel, but do not always have long coats available. Usually one litter a year does have some long coated puppies. A sound dog, in both body and temperament should be more important than simply the colour or coat of the dog.

Our Breeding Dogs Back
to
INDEX

All of our dogs come in the house and are housebroken and obedience trained. None of them are strictly kennel dogs, as they are our friends and companions first, and breeding dogs second. We try to get our dogs involved with different areas of work such as obedience, Schutzhund, tracking, agility and obstacle training, and protection/attack work.

Our dogs all have their hips x-rayed and elbows checked before they are bred. We screen our primary breeding dogs and randomly screen a few puppies from each litter for eye disorders. We also test breeding stock for von Willebrand's disease, a inherited bleeding disorder. Dogs are carefully screened to have sound body structure, and a good, solid working temperament. We are on our fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh generations of some of our bloodlines, and have seen a very consistent type of German Shepherd emerge from our kennel.

Our Foundation Female
(now retired)
Back
to
INDEX

The foundation female of our current bloodlines was Akela - Bara Z Konce Ase CD - a dark red sable Czechoslovakian import. She was a big boned, solid dog, and has a high retrieve drive. She was trained in tracking, obedience, and protection work. She had her first title in obedience and was a personal protection dog.

Akela was imported as a puppy, so I raised and trained her myself. She was gentle with all people, especially children. She produced excellent ratios for hips, having produced over thirty puppies with clear hips. Her puppies are noted for their sound bodies, even temperaments, and their high will to please. She has offspring on police forces across Canada and the United States, there are more than 30 Police Service dogs that are directly related to her. Akela sadly died just shy of her thirteenth birthday in April, 2004.

Books that We Recommend Back
to
INDEX

The Art of Raising a Puppy, by the Monks of New Skete. An excellent book covering the raising and training of puppies, written by the Monks of New Skete, who breed, raise and train their own German Shepherds at their monastery. Excellent for new puppy owners.

The Perfect Puppy, by Gwen Bailey. This book deals with how to raise a problem free dog, in today's society. This book is another important book for new or repeat puppy owners.

Don't Shoot the Dog, by Karen Pryor. This book was marked as the new art of teaching and training dogs in the 1980's. It has an easy to read style, and contains a lot of valuable information about the basics of most modern day dog training (Positive re-enforcement, rather than correction). Helps to prevent behaviour problems.

Schutzhund, Theory and Training Methods, by Barwig & Hilliard. An in-depth book dealing with the raising and training of a Schutzhund dog, and trial requirements.
